There is no authentic culture, no limits and no end in it's development. The traveler choses where to go and what to experience and what to tell. Recently the interest in traveling elsewhere has apparently gone down in what the author construes as an end of the myth of the noble savage. People don't go elsewhere to find themselves by being different, generally better, idealized versions of themselves. I want to answer to this that I have never felt the need to perform, to be, to change something about myself, even though I did and do travel to find myself. It's just that for me, I look for other people and what they feel and think. For other places and languages where I will and have to behave differently. For the time and freedom of obligation. For the challenge and thrill also. But for me other peoples are not so much mirrors as partners. In general that seems to be something I am quite alone with: seeing others as partners with whom you do something so that you both grow rather than just a way to see yourself. That is undoubtedly also happening, and it is important, but it happens everywhere.
