First impressions. The level of ritual and politeness on a japanese airline is out of this world. I've heard people say that it is dishonest and just that: a ritual, but the feeling this instils in a customer, a stranger but fellow human being is impactful. It is not only behaviour and speech but everything from the little attentions to the helpful objects provided and the tutorials on how to behave safely and appropriately in the prerecorded messages gives you a feeling of order, peace and security. There are different degrees to this and, I'm sure, to the drawbacks, but a polite social order is in my opinion a necessary basis, japan just makes it into an artform.
