I came here to visit a friend. He’s a combination of his country and the homo ludus I immediately get along with. Basically his life is joyful discovery after joyful discovery, very short lived bouts of interest all over the spectrum of human endeavour. He’s the second such person I met recently and I’m incredibly lucky that these people find me sympathetic too, as they teach me the joy of being alive. Enthusiasm is contagious and these friends have an abundance of it! My favourite memory from this trip is at the same time telling for this friendship and the local culture. After a night listening to music at a club we find ourselves, me, the friend and his girlfriend, at about 1am in the city’s underground. They tell me about the artistic designs of the metro stations and how the new train cars have easter eggs built in. The holes in the ventilation grids are sometimes pacman-shaped or have other cute or iconic forms. So at 1 am we enter a train and almost run from window to window to spot them, rejoicing when we do. People around us smile at the scene of a couple showing their foreign friend tiny packmen.
I saw the most inspiring places because of them. Thielska galeriet, prins eugens museum, Millesgarden, where nobody goes but the high culture and aesthetic sensibilities of this beautiful city really come through. A successful trip and a wonderful friendship.t
